Spent 4 weekends chasing a basement smell, turned out to be a $25 downspout issue
I moved into a place in Calgary back in March and every time it rained, that damp basement smell got worse. I tried a dehumidifier, checked the sump pump, even tore out some drywall, nothing worked. Finally had a buddy who does HVAC come by and he spotted it in 10 minutes, the eavestrough downspout was dumping water right against the foundation, not even 3 feet away. I extended it with a cheap few feet of pipe and a little elbow, cost me like $25 at Home Depot. Fixed the smell almost overnight and my basement actually feels dry now. Anyone else finding that the simplest exterior fix solves way more than the fancy indoor gear?

You tore out drywall before checking the downspout? That would've been my first walk around the house on a rainy day, not weekend number four. Wild how the free stuff gets missed.
