Warning: painted our Edmonton bungalow's trim in 2019, finally redid it last month and the difference is wild
We painted the trim on our 1952 bungalow in Edmonton back in 2019 with whatever exterior paint was on sale, and by this spring it was peeling down to bare wood on the south side. Last month we scraped it all, primed properly, and used a mid-grade paint, and the house looks 15 years newer for about $400 in supplies. Has anyone else had a south-facing wall eat through cheap paint that fast, or is that just how it goes here?

Ran into the same thing on my place in Mill Woods, south wall trim got wrecked in about 4 years with the cheap stuff. But I'll push back a bit on blaming the paint price alone, because prep is usually the real killer out here. If that old paint went on over bare or chalky wood with no primer, even a good paint would peel fast on a wall that takes sun all day plus freeze thaw cycles. Mid grade with proper primer is probably the right call, but I'd bet the scraping and priming did more work than the paint itself.
