Was dead set against tankless water heaters until a conversation changed my mind
I was over at a friend's place in Calgary last weekend and he was raving about his new Navien unit he put in 3 months ago. Said his gas bill dropped by $40 a month and he never runs out of hot water even with two teenagers showering back to back. I always figured they were too expensive and finicky but he walked me through the install cost vs savings over 5 years. Now I'm thinking about swapping my old 50 gallon tank out... anyone else made the switch and regretted it or loved it?

Wait, so you're telling me your buddy actually math'd out a 5 year savings plan for a water heater? That's a whole new level of adulthood I'm not ready for. I mean, I'm still over here picking my water heater based on which color looks less ugly in the basement. But seriously, $40 off the gas bill every month sounds nice, until you realize teenagers will find a way to burn through that savings by leaving the sink running while they brush their teeth for 20 minutes. I'd probably end up installing it wrong and flooding the garage anyway.

Forty bucks a month adds up fast, but those teenagers will find a way to waste it somewhere else for sure. My uncle put one in last year and loves it, says his showers actually feel hotter now. The install cost scared me off but maybe if you DIY it's not so bad. You'd definitely flood the garage, I'd probably set the thing on fire instead.
