Got a little too confident with my orbital sander on a thrift store desk

I was refinishing a $20 nightstand from Goodwill in Tulsa and thought I could smooth out a weird stain in 10 seconds flat. Instead, I burned a groove right through the veneer and now it looks like a meteor hit it. Anybody here ever tried patching veneer with wood filler and stain and actually had it look okay?

Hit recipe number 100 in my notebook tonight and it felt weirdly huge

I was just messing around making a quick shrimp scampi with some frozen shrimp from Aldi and some dried parsley I've had for like 2 years. Counted my recipes after and realized this was number 100 in my little spiral notebook I started during lockdown in 2020. Never thought I'd stick with cooking this long but here I am. Anyone else keep a running tally or am I just a weirdo?

Pro tip: thermal paste isn't optional on a CPU upgrade

I was swapping a used Ryzen 5 into my home server on a Sunday afternoon and forgot to apply fresh paste. The system booted but shut down after 30 seconds from overheating. Had to tear it all apart, clean the old residue with isopropyl, and reapply before it would stay stable. Anyone else forget a basic step like this and panic for a hot second?

Had a Garmin GNS 430 fail mid-flight last Thursday

I was up near Bakersfield on a routine check flight and the screen just went dark on the GNS 430. No warning lights or anything beforehand, just a dead unit. Pulled the circuit breaker and reset it, still nothing. Had to divert to Meadows Field and swap in a loaner box. Anyone else seen these older units give out with no warning signs?

Am I the only one who thinks anime dubs are ruining the original vibe?

I was watching a clip from Attack on Titan in English and a buddy said the voice acting felt 'more natural' than the Japanese version. Honestly, I think they strip out all the emotion and replace it with flat delivery. Does anyone else skip dubs because they change how you connect with the characters?

Wasted $60 on a variant cover that wasn't even rare

I grabbed an exclusive variant of Ultimate Spider-Man #1 last month for $60 thinking it'd be worth something later. Turns out the print run was huge and it's selling for maybe $15 now on eBay. I should've checked the print numbers first. Anyone else get burned by a so-called 'limited' variant?

I used to think PVA glue was for cheap projects only, now I'm not so sure

For years I ONLY used wheat paste on my cloth bindings because I thought PVA was just for school kids. A guy named Tom in Portland did a spine repair for me using PVA and it held up perfectly through a whole rainy winter. Now I'm starting to think wheat paste is actually the weaker option for everyday books. Still, wheat paste feels more traditional and easier to reverse if needed. Has anyone else switched sides on glue and regretted it or been glad they did?

I used frozen ground beef straight from the freezer in a skillet and ended up with burnt outside raw inside mess

Thought I could save time by not thawing my ground beef for tacos last night. Put the frozen block right into a hot pan and the outside charred while the middle stayed ice cold. Took forever to break it apart and cook through. Anyone else ever make this mistake or have a trick for cooking frozen ground beef properly?

Wind flags on tall loads keep getting ignored on my site in Houston

I keep seeing guys skip tying wind flags on long beams when we're lifting above 200 feet. Last Tuesday a steel beam started twisting bad because nobody could see it swinging from the ground. This is basic stuff, you know, the flag lets the spotter track movement before it becomes a problem. My foreman told me last month, "flag it or flag yourself down." I've watched at least three close calls in six months that could have been avoided with a simple piece of ribbon. Is everyone else seeing this slack or is it just our yard?
