Question about reusing fixer vs just dumping it

I've been shooting film for about 2 years and always just dumped my fixer down the drain after one session. But last week at a darkroom meetup in Denver, this old timer told me he reuses his fixer up to 15 times with a simple test strip. I'm now wondering if I've been wasting chemistry and money this whole time. Has anyone else had to unlearn a basic darkroom habit like this?

Ugh, tell me about it... feels like throwing money straight in the trash.
