Hit 500 trail miles this year and I'm actually pissed about it

I just crossed 500 miles on the Appalachian Trail this past weekend near the Grayson Highlands and I'm honestly frustrated. Not because of the milestone itself, but because I didn't plan my route better and missed the section around Mt. Rogers where the wild ponies hang out. I was so focused on hitting that number that I rushed through three days of boring ridge walking instead of taking a detour to see something cool. Now I'm sitting here thinking about those 500 miles and half of them feel like a blur of blisters and bad campsites. Did anyone else blow past a cool landmark or side trail while chasing a mileage goal? Should I just go back and redo that part next season or is that a waste of time?

Old timer at a camera show told me to stop using compressed air on shutter curtains

Guy must have been 80, looked at me cleaning a Nikon F2 and just shook his head. Said I was blasting dust deeper into the mechanism. He was right. Six months later that same F2 came back with a sticky curtain. Have to take the whole mirror box out now because of what I did. Anyone else learn that lesson the hard way?

Park Tool spoke tension meter debate finally got me

I always thought Park Tool's tension meter was overpriced and you could just go by feel. But I was at a shop in Portland last week and this old mechanic showed me how two wheels I built by feel had spokes all over the place tension-wise. He let me use his meter and I found spokes that were 15kgf apart on the same side. I get it now, you can't really feel that difference. Has anyone else changed their mind after actually trying a precision tool?

Figured out the magic of a power strip at a cafe in Austin last Tuesday

I was at this busy spot off South Congress, and my laptop was at 15% with no outlet nearby. Some guy saw me panicking and slid me his power strip under the table. I ended up finishing my whole afternoon shift off that one strip, and now I carry one in my bag everywhere. Has anyone else found a random cafe hack that totally saved your work day?

Walked past a crew trimming a live oak in July last summer near Austin and had to bite my tongue. Have you ever tried to explain oak wilt risk to a homeowner mid-heatwave without sounding like a know-it-all?

Found a 1980s manual at a pawn shop that fixed my spindle drift

I was in Reno last month killing time between jobs and walked into this dusty pawn shop near downtown. Found a 1982 operating manual for a Deckel milling machine tucked behind some stereo equipment for 5 bucks. Read through it and there was a whole section on adjusting the gibs in the Y-axis that my modern digital setup never mentioned. Took that advice home and my spindle drift dropped by 0.002 inches on the first try. Anyone else pick up old reference material from random places?

Unpopular opinion: letting my hens free range all day is worse for their health

I was at the county fair in July and watched a lady's flock get attacked by a hawk right in front of me, made me rethink my whole setup. Now I'm torn between giving them freedom and keeping them safe in a run, but the run feels cramped for 12 birds. Do you guys think a covered run is safer or do the benefits of full free range outweigh the risk?

Still annoyed about that cracked windshield job from last week

I had a 2018 Civic come in with a crack that ran from the passenger side all the way across. Customer didn't want to pay for a full replacement, just wanted me to fill it. I knew it wouldn't hold but I tried their way first. After 3 tries with different resin kits it still spidered out. Finally just did the full replacement like I said from the start and charged them the labor for the wasted attempts. Has anyone else dealt with customers who think filler resin fixes everything?

PSA: Found out my mortar was drying too fast because of a windy jobsite in Springfield

Last Tuesday I was laying brick on a exposed wall and the mortar kept crusting over before I could tap the next block in. A guy from the supply yard told me to mix in a little more lime and wet the bricks first, has anyone else dealt with wind causing issues like that?

Spent $600 on a Snap-On torque wrench and snapped a bolt anyway because I forgot to set it back to zero before putting it away

Took me a full afternoon to extract that broken bolt from an old Cummins block in a hurry, and now I'm wondering if that premium cost was just paying for the vanity of having the shiny truck come to my driveway - has anyone else had a cheap torque wrench actually outlast the expensive ones?
