Serious question, did I get played by the $180 CLA on a camera that was already fine?
I sent my dad's old rangefinder off for a clean, lube, and adjust about 4 months ago because the shutter felt a little sticky, and the shop charged me $180 and kept it for 7 weeks. The thing came back working exactly the same, and when I ran a test roll through it in my backyard the shots looked no different from the ones I took before I mailed it. A local guy at the camera show in Schaumburg looked it over for free and said the shutter was within spec the entire time, and the sticky feel was just old grease on the advance lever that a $6 bottle of lighter fluid would have fixed. So I basically set $180 and 7 weeks on fire for a stranger to tell me nothing was wrong. Before you ship your gear off for a service, get a cheap second opinion first, because that invoice stings way more than a test roll does. Has anyone else paid for a repair that turned out to be nothing?
