The $8 expired film that beat my fresh rolls from B&H

I shot a 2004 roll of Kodak Gold found in a thrift store in Portland and the colors came out warmer than the same stock I bought new last spring, so why is everyone so quick to toss expired film when the latitude is actually the best part, anyone else find that older film handles highlights better?
