Update: My blush moment confusing shonen and shojo at a friend's meetup

It clicked that our anime chat flubs often open up funnier, more real talks than perfect recall ever does.

Mixing up shonen and shojo happens to everyone, it's not really about boy vs girl shows anymore anyway. Some of the best shonen stuff has huge female fanbases, and plenty of shojo series appeal to guys. Like, Fruits Basket is shojo but tons of dudes love it, and Attack on Titan is shonen but my whole friend group watches it. Getting the labels wrong just shows you're talking about the actual stories, not the marketing categories. Those slip-ups make the conversation way better than just listing correct facts.

Messed up calling Fullmetal Alchemist shojo once, but my cousin just nodded and said yeah, the themes hit hard for everyone. We spent the next hour arguing about our favorite arcs instead of worrying about labels. Funny how getting it wrong can lead to better talks about what actually matters in the shows.

Love how @tessa_thompson gets it, like acting like mixing up shojo and shonen is some moral failing. Next they'll be gatekeeping the snack table at cons because you brought the wrong brand of pocky. Let them do the math.
