A customer in Austin told me I was using too much lubricant on dryer drum rollers
I had this older guy drop off a dryer for a noisy drum, and as I was showing him what I did, he pointed out I was greasing the axle inside the roller instead of just the outer bushing. Told me it would just collect lint and gum up faster, which honestly made total sense once I thought about it. Been doing it the right way for about 6 months now, and I gotta say those rollers are lasting way longer. Anyone else get a simple tip from a customer that changed how you do a basic repair?

My buddy Steve who runs a shop in Dallas had a customer show him that he was overfilling oil ports on washing machine bearings, basically drowning the seals. He used to just pump grease until it oozed out everywhere, thinking more was better, but that lady explained how it causes the seals to blow out early. He told me that one tip alone saved him from having to redo bearings on warranty calls maybe twice a year since he switched to smaller doses.

That reminds me of my neighbor Bill who used to dump half a quart of oil into his lawnmower because he thought the dipstick was just a suggestion. Took him three blown head gaskets to figure out the engine was basically drowning. He's finally on a proper maintenance schedule now but I swear his lawn still judges him. So yeah, @the_julia, sometimes less grease is the smarter move even if it feels wrong at first.

@paige514 that bit about "the dipstick was just a suggestion" cracked me up because my buddy Rick swore by the same logic on his truck's diff... until the axle seals started weeping within six months.
