Almost used a universal defrost timer on a Whirlpool fridge, glad I didnt
Last Tuesday a guy in Tempe called about his fridge icing up every 3 days and I grabbed the cheap universal timer off my truck instead of ordering the OEM one. Universal was $22, the real part was $61, and I stood there in his kitchen staring at both like an idiot. I went with the OEM because the wiring harness on his 2016 model had that extra wire the universal skips, and I have been burned before. Two hours later the fridge cycled right and his ice maker came back, no callbacks in 5 days. What got me was the universal box said "fits most" which in this trade means it fits almost none. Anyone else keep a list of the fridges where the cheap timer actually works? I'd love to stop guessing on every service call.
Wow, 61 bucks for the real part versus 22 and you still had to stand there second guessing it, that is brutal. That "fits most" line on the box is the biggest lie in this whole trade, it should honestly say "fits some, ruins the rest." Good call going with the OEM, that extra wire would have bit you for sure.
