One customer's fridge story still bugs me after 3 years

Had a lady in Columbus call me out to her house because her side by side was running warm. I found the condenser fan dead and quoted her $180 for the part and labor. She asked if she could just unplug it and use a cooler for a week until payday, I said sure. She paid me for the diagnostic and never called back. I saw her at the grocery store last month and she told me she bought a new fridge instead because her nephew said the old one was too old to fix. That fridge was only 8 years old, she could have saved herself $900. Has anyone else had customers get talked out of a cheap repair by someone who has no clue?

Man, that nephew probably saved her $900 but cost her about three times that in the long run. That's the classic "my brother's cousin's roommate knows appliances" move, right? It's like people trust a random family member who has zero skin in the game over the person who actually opened up the machine and saw the dead part. Eight years is basically middle aged for a fridge, that thing had plenty of life left. But hey, at least the appliance store down the street made a nice commission off her new shiny box. Guess the only thing colder than her old fridge was that "advice" from her nephew.

Did my ex give me appliance advice too, or she just take the TV?
