That week where every single icemaker I touched tried to fight me
Last Tuesday I rolled up to a service call in Oak Park for a fridge that was making this grinding noise like it was chewing rocks. Turns out the icemaker had a frozen auger motor, so I swapped it out, easy enough. Then Wednesday I get to a house where the icemaker is just dumping water all over the floor because the fill tube cracked. Thursday I had a Samsung where the ice cubes came out tasting like old fish because the water line had some kind of biofilm in it, had to run a whole cleaning cycle three times. By Friday I told my buddy Mike I was ready to smash every icemaker in town with a sledgehammer. The worst part was Saturday, a customer asked me if I could make her icemaker produce smaller cubes because they were too big for her fancy whiskey glasses. Has anyone else had a run where one thing just follows you around all week?

Oh man, that Saturday whiskey glass thing would have sent me over the edge too. But here's something nobody's talking about. Those Samsung icemakers with the biofilm taste? It's usually because people install the fridge in a garage or sunroom that gets hot, and the water line sits there breeding stuff before it ever freezes. I've seen three calls this month alone where moving the fridge like 15 feet into the kitchen fixed the whole problem. Not saying it's always that, but it's worth checking before you go replacing parts and running cleaning cycles all day.

Tastes like old fish" is pretty rough, I'll give you that. But honestly, moving the fridge 15 feet seems like kind of a huge pain for something that might not even be the real problem. I've had customers swear their water tastes perfect and it's just the icemaker being junk. Plus, not everyone has a kitchen layout where you can just shuffle things around like that. Some of these older houses, you move a fridge 15 feet and you're suddenly blocking a doorway or have no outlet nearby. Feels like a bandaid fix more than a real solution to me.
