A homeowner in Austin made me rethink my whole stump grinding approach

I was grinding a 30 inch pecan stump near a fence line, and the guy came out and asked why I didn't just bore out the middle and let it rot naturally. He said it saves the yard from torn up turf, but also mentioned he's seen roots fail fast when you leave a cavity for moisture, or is it just a slower risk?

Bore outs rot roots way slower, tearing turf beats dodgy fence stakes every time.
