I had a storm-damaged oak last April in Salem with a split leader hanging over a shed, and cutting it back to a stub was the only safe call with the bucket truck I had. Every guy on my crew told me it would rot out in a year, but both cuts callused over clean by fall and the canopy came back thick. Now I am not saying go top everything, but this blanket rule that a hard cut always kills a tree feels like something people repeat without checking. What is your cutoff for a hard cut when the drop zone is that bad?
Wait, they callused over clean by fall? That blows my mind because I've seen stubs rot out in less than that. How big were the cuts, like diameter wise? Feels like that would matter a lot here.
