A 90 year old volunteer corrected my dig notes at Mesa Verde last spring
I was cataloging some pottery sherds at a site near the old pueblo and had them labeled as late Pueblo III. This woman, probably 90 if she was a day, walked over and said "honey, that's Pueblo IV, look at the black on white line work." She had been volunteering there since the 1970s and knew every pot style like it was her family. I double checked the reference book and she was spot on. Made me realize how much institutional knowledge we lose when older excavators stop coming out. Anyone else had a volunteer or old timer school them on something the textbooks got wrong?
