Just realized I've cleaned exactly 1,000 chimneys in my 8 years doing this. That's a lot of soot.

A thousand chimneys means you've seen enough soot to make a hundred snowmen, but the creepy, flammable kind. Your lungs must have their own little black raincloud by now. That's a whole lot of people who didn't burn their houses down because of you. Congrats on the grimy milestone.

Used leftover pickle juice in my chicken brine and got a weirdly good crust

Oh man, I tried that once and my chicken tasted like a sad deli sandwich. Guess I used the wrong juice.

My buddy told me my rule explanations were making people zone out, so I started using the 'play a practice round first' method and it cut setup time in half.

Why learn rules before you can play?

Had to choose between a new camera or a better light for my inspections

Good call on the Sunex. That kind of power is a game changer for old brickwork. I keep a small, high-lumen headlamp in my kit for tight spots where you can't hold a light. It leaves both hands free to poke around. The right angle lets you shine light directly into a crack from the side, which makes flaws stand out. It's saved me from missing more than one problem over the years.

Appreciation post: That $500 laser level I bought for a kitchen remodel in Phoenix

My brother in law still uses a string level and a piece of chalk, and watching him work is like a history channel reenactment. I held out for years too, convinced my eyeballs and a four foot level were good enough. The first time I used a laser for hanging cabinets, I had to admit my entire past self was a stubborn idiot. That Huepar one lane.drew mentioned is the one I loan to people when they want to try before they buy, because they never give it back.
