Ground penetrating radar vs old fashioned test pits

I compared GPR results with actual test pits at a site in rural Vermont last fall. The radar missed a small hearth feature that we found digging just 50 feet away. Have any of you had similar issues where tech didn't match the real digging?

GPR's great until it isn't, definitely learn the limits the hard way like that.

Dug up an old water line once because I got too cocky with the settings... ended up with a muddy mess and a very unhappy homeowner. The thing humbles you real quick when you think you've got it all figured out. Still swear by the method, just not my judgment anymore.
