My friend told me to always pack a power strip for cafe work

I was in Austin last month and the coffee shop only had one outlet open, but I had my strip so we both plugged in. Ended up sharing it with another coder who bought me a latte as thanks. Do you guys carry anything like that or just hope for the best?

I was writing the same code over and over for a month before I saw the problem

I was building a simple website for a local bakery and kept copying my code to make three different pages. After about four weeks, my friend looked at my project and said, 'You know you can use a function for that, right?' I had been typing out the same navigation bar HTML on every single page. I felt pretty silly. Has anyone else missed something basic like that for a long time?

Looking for a recipe my great-aunt used to make in her Chicago kitchen

When I was a kid in the late 80s, my great-aunt in Chicago would make a dense, dark rye bread with caraway seeds and a touch of molasses. She called it her 'Sunday bread' and only made it a few times a year. I found her old recipe box last month, but the card for that bread is just a faded, stained list of ingredients with no instructions or bake times. Has anyone worked with a similar old rye recipe and know the typical method?

Just learned that the original Monopoly game was based on a property tax protest

I was reading a history of board games last week and saw that Monopoly started as 'The Landlord's Game' in 1903. It was made by a woman named Lizzie Magie to show how rents make people poor. The version we all know was basically stolen and sold by Parker Brothers in 1935. I always thought it was just about getting rich, but the whole point was the opposite. Does knowing this change how you feel about playing it, or is it just a game night classic no matter what?

I was sure my hens needed more light in winter, but a talk at the Portland Urban Farm Store changed my mind.

I finally chose a character name from a baby book instead of making one up

For my new fantasy story set in a place like Savannah, I had to pick a name for my main hero. Everyone in my writing group said to invent a totally new name, but I went with 'Elara' from an old baby name book I found. It just fit her better than any of my made-up ones, and readers said it felt real right away. Has anyone else had better luck with real names over fantasy ones for a main character?

Warning about spoilers in the Crunchyroll forums last week

Has anyone noticed how spoilers are getting sneakier? I saw a video thumbnail on YouTube that basically showed a major character death from an anime I was catching up on. Honestly, that sounds like they just paved over the challenge. The old messy scramble was the real test, it made reaching the lake feel earned. Now it's just another smooth walk in the woods, no different from any other trail. They're taking all the rough edges out of the outdoors.

A client's comment about my pipe sizing method made me rethink it

Wait, isn't value engineering usually about cutting costs, not adding things? I thought that phase was for finding cheaper ways to meet the specs, not for catching missing loads. Maybe the article @gray_walker49 read meant the design development phase? It's a key difference because by the time you get to VE, the big equipment is often already set. Catching it then is lucky, but it's way better to nail the equipment list early. That hospital story just shows how easy it is for a project's scope to slip past everyone if you're not constantly checking.
