Hot take: I passed on the inland cave dig for a coastal midden site and I'm still mad about it
Two summers back I got invited to two digs in the same month and had to pick one, a dry cave in the hills with possible bone tools and a shell midden right on the coast. The cave had way more promise on paper but the crew leader was known for being rough on new people, so I went with the midden because it sounded easier and the weather was nicer. Big mistake. Three weeks of screening wet sand in the fog and all we pulled was a couple of broken fish hooks and a ton of oyster shell. Meanwhile the cave crew posted photos of a bone point and what looked like burned seeds in a hearth feature by week two. I keep telling myself the midden data still matters for diet studies but honestly it stings. My old field school buddy in Corpus Christi says the same thing happened to him and he just quit digging for two years after. Anyone else ever bail on the harder site and regret it, or am I just being dramatic about a bunch of shells?
