I finally chose to leave the pottery sherds in the ground at my dig site in Mesa last month
My field school supervisor gave me two options: bag every sherd we found for lab analysis, or leave the plain body sherds in place and only collect the painted ones. I went with leaving them in situ because the context mattered more than the count, and our site map ended up way more accurate than the group that bagged everything. Has anyone else had a supervisor push back on that call?"}
