A retired guy at the truck stop in Flagstaff showed me a better way to check injector lines

Got a specific type of cardboard you find works best? Like, does the thickness matter or is any old box good enough?

A trip to the Blue Bottle in San Francisco made me question my whole pour-over method

Jamie saying it "unlocks something" is exactly the kind of talk that makes me roll my eyes. It's coffee, not a secret vault. I tried the slow pour thing for a week and yeah, maybe it was a bit smoother, but four minutes for one cup? That's just making a simple task into a big show. Most of the difference people taste is probably because they expect it to be better after all that work. If you like the ritual, go for it, but I'm not convinced it's some huge game changer.

Finally got the hang of that exposed aggregate mix for a patio in Phoenix last week, and the client tipped me an extra $100.

Spraying the retarder at the right time is everything. On a really hot morning, I'll sometimes do two lighter passes instead of one heavy spray. First pass right after the finish, second one just before I plan to wash. It buys you a little extra window if the heat comes up faster than you thought. Lets the top layer set up just enough so the aggregate doesn't get pulled out. Messed that up once and had to grind down a whole section. Never again.

I went with a 3-season tent for a Colorado winter trip and everyone said I was nuts

Wyoming's the best for that. Nothing beats those open roads.

I was reading an old Otis manual from 1978 and it said a standard traction elevator motor from that era could pull 3000 pounds with just a 15 horsepower unit. That seems crazy low by today's standards.

That old tech was surprisingly efficient with gearing and direct drive. Found a similar manual for a Montgomery unit that explained the whole mechanical advantage setup. Makes you wonder what we traded for raw power today.
