The pottery shard I brushed off turned out to be a 1700s pipe stem

I found a little clay piece sticking out of a riverbank near Columbus last month and nearly tossed it aside, but after showing a local museum volunteer they matched it to a tobacco pipe stem from the 1770s, and now I'm wondering how many other "junk" finds I've walked past, anyone else ever almost missed something big?

Did you check if it's actually a pipe stem and not just a broken clay fishing weight?
