I used to toss dried up tubes straight in the trash, now I cut them open
For years I would just pitch a tube once the cap got crusty and it stopped squeezing, probably threw out 15 or 20 of them in my first year of painting. Then a guy at a swap meet in Columbus showed me that you can slice the tube open with a craft knife and scoop out the paint still stuck near the crimp. I got almost a week of usable burnt sienna out of one tube I was about to toss, and the stuff near the top was still wet. Now I keep a box of cut open tubes and use them first before I ever squeeze a fresh one. It is messy and you need to use it fast because it dries out overnight, but free paint is free paint. Has anyone tried taping the cut tube back shut, or does that just make a mess?
