Saw a "mystery bag" of dried up paint tubes for $15 at a church sale and almost walked away
I figured it was all rock solid junk, but the lady running the table said her son had wrapped each cap in plastic wrap before storing them in a shoebox. I popped one open right there and the burnt sienna was still soft, so I handed over the cash for 14 tubes. Got them home, and 11 of the 14 squeezed out fine after I added a few drops of water and stirred them with a toothpick. Has anyone else had luck reviving tubes this way, or does the plastic wrap trick only work if they were sealed up fairly fresh?
My friend Dana found a shoebox of 20 tubes at an estate sale in Toledo last spring, and the guy had done the same plastic wrap thing on each cap. She got maybe 13 of them going again with water and a lot of stirring, but the yellows were too far gone. Her theory is that the wrap helps but it comes down to how tight the cap was screwed on before it got wrapped, since air gets in through the threads. So yours at 11 out of 14 is a pretty solid haul.
