Vent: Art teacher told me my brushes were ruined from improper washing

About three years ago I took a watercolor class at the local community center in Toledo. The instructor watched me clean my brushes and said I was pushing paint all the way up into the ferrule, which is why bristles were splaying out after a few months. She made me switch to only swirling the brush in a jar, never jabbing the tip against the bottom. Now I also use a little brush soap after each session and lay them flat to dry. Has anyone else had a teacher correct something you thought was totally fine?

Once my pottery teacher in Columbus made me redo an entire mug because I was smoothing the walls too thin at the bottom. I was so annoyed at the time, but that mug is the only one from that class that didn't crack in the kiln lol. Brushes are the same way, you think you know how to clean them until someone tells you you've been doing it wrong for years. I still catch myself jabbing bristles sometimes out of habit.

Yeah that pottery teacher sounds like a real one, @abby_scott.
