Vent: That writing prompt contest I entered turned into a total disaster

I signed up for this local library's flash fiction contest last month. 50 bucks prize, 500 word limit, theme was "unexpected visitor". I spent 3 days on my story, got it to where I was actually proud of it. Turned it in. Then found out the judge was a retired English teacher who hated horror elements. My whole story had a twist ending with a ghost. Didn't even get an honorable mention. Has anyone else had a contest judge kill your vibe with their personal preferences?

Old timer at a competition told me I was choking my fire and that changed everything about how I set dampers

My first year doing a KCBS comp, this guy walks by my setup and says 'you got your intake choked tighter than a frog in a jar.' I had no idea what he meant. Turns out I was running my offset with the exhaust damper wide open and the intake barely cracked. He showed me his rig - intake wide, exhaust barely 1/4 open. Tried it on my brisket and my temps stopped spiking all over the place. Anyone else get one piece of advice that totally rewired how you think about airflow?

I finally learned why that old lady kept calling me back

Fixed her refrigerator three times in six months. Last time she stood in the kitchen and watched me, then said 'you're missing the rubber strip behind the fan cover.' She was right. How do you handle customers who know more than they let on?

Appreciation post: Swapped vegetable oil for propylene glycol in my homemade fogger

After 6 months of greasy residue coating everything at my Halloween party, I finally tried a cheap bottle of propylene glycol from the pharmacy - and the fog is thin, white, and disappears clean now. Has anyone else noticed a massive difference switching fluids on a budget build?

Shoutout to the lady who stopped me from tossing 10 year old seeds

I was about to throw away this bag of wildflower seeds I found in my garage from like 2013 and a customer at the bar grabbed my arm and said wait no don't. She told me to soak them in warm water for 12 hours and then plant them and I swear 7 out of 10 actually sprouted last spring. Has anyone else tried reviving old seeds like that or did I just get lucky?

Serious question, is the 'take the high route to avoid crowds' advice always bad?

My buddy Hank swore up and down that the North Fork Trail near Ouray would be empty if we went Friday at 4 PM, and we ended up stuck behind a group of 20 scouts for 3 miles, so has anyone else had a supposedly 'secret' route totally blow up on them?

Met a guy at a car meet who built a hydraulic workbench on casters for like $200

He showed me how he welded an old scissor jack frame into a rolling table, and now I can't stop thinking about how much easier that would make engine swaps in my tiny garage. Has anyone else rigged up cheap lifting gear that actually holds up?

Just crossed $10k in emergency savings and I'm shook

I set a goal to hit $10k by the end of the year but I just checked my account last night and I'm already at $10,430. That's after putting an extra $200 from a side gig into it last week. It feels huge because I used to live paycheck to paycheck and never thought I'd get here. Anyone else hit a number that felt impossible at first?

I finally caught myself relying on bad training data for my model

I spent 3 months building a sentiment analysis tool for restaurant reviews and kept getting 40% accuracy. Last week I realized I was using Yelp reviews from 2014 because they were free, but the language in reviews has totally changed since then. Has anyone else wasted time on old datasets before realizing you need current stuff?

Dropped $150 on a star tracker mount that barely worked for one clear night

I got so hyped about getting longer exposures with my DSLR that I bought this budget star tracker off Amazon back in February. Took it out to a dark spot near Ellensburg and spent 2 hours trying to get it to polar align right with just the little scope it came with. The thing kept drifting after 30 seconds even with perfect setup, and the motor made this grinding noise that scared off a coyote. I wasted a full moonless night fiddling while my buddy just stacked shots using a tripod and got sharper results. Called their support and they said I needed to buy a $60 accessory battery pack that still wouldn't fix the wobble. Returned it finally but lost $30 on shipping back. Has anyone else had luck with those cheap trackers or should I just save up for a real one?
