The 5-second rule in my kitchen turned out to be a 24-hour thing
I read this food safety study last Tuesday that said bacteria can latch onto food in under 5 seconds, but the real shocker was how long it survives on dry surfaces like my countertop. I always thought a quick pickup was fine, turns out it's not just the floor that's risky. Where'd I see it? A link from the CDC's site that my sister sent me after I ate a chip off the couch. Has anyone else actually tested that rule with a timer, or am I the only one who just eyeballs it?
I actually gave up on the 5-second rule years ago after watching my dog eat a piece of toast off the kitchen floor, then lick the same spot where I dropped a grape later that week. I started counting in my head for a while, but honestly, the timer thing is way too much work when you're hungry. What kinda worked for me is just having a rule about what foods I'll rescue, like dry crackers or chips are fine, but anything wet or sticky goes straight in the trash no matter how fast I grab it. My countertops get wiped down daily so I'm less worried about those, but the floor is a total no-go zone for me now, especially after I saw my roommate walk in with muddy shoes and step right where my pretzel fell. I know the science says bacteria can move quick, but I figure my immune system has earned a few cheat meals by now, lol.
