Just found out I had my telescope pointed at a streetlight for 3 nights straight thinking it was Venus
So I got a new scope for my birthday and I was out in the backyard in Tucson every night that week trying to get a good look at what I thought was Venus. The "planet" never moved and had this weird orange glow but I kept telling myself it was atmospheric stuff. Then my neighbor leaned over the fence and asked why I was staring at the cul-de-sac light pole with a $200 telescope. I felt so dumb but also kind of impressed that a streetlight can look that convincing at 2am. How do you guys figure out what you're actually looking at when you're new to this?
