Jumped on the 400 bandwagon a couple years ago and never looked back. My lab guy told me the same thing, that 400 outsells everything else by a mile, and it makes sense once you think about it. The newer emulsions handle light so well now that the old gap between speeds is mostly gone, and being able to shoot indoors or on a cloudy day without swapping rolls is a huge plus. I still keep a roll of 100 in the bag for really bright beach days when I want to shoot wide open, but that's maybe one roll for every ten of the 400. Honestly the whole "save the slow film for sunshine" rule feels like it comes from an older era of film.

Ive snapped a few of those plastic ones myself over the years, but usually it's because I rushed the install or forced something that wasnt lining up. Sure, metal replacements exist and they wont crack, but they can also bind up and wear out the drawer slides if you're not careful. Honestly, if you set the plate with the right gap, the factory plastic ones last years. Sounds like a one off screw up, not a design flaw. Fix the gap and move on.
