My star trail shot got wrecked by a porch light 3 doors down, check your setup before you freeze
So last Saturday I drove out to a dark spot near Lake Texoma to shoot star trails with my old Canon and a cheap interval timer. I set up around 11pm, got about 90 minutes of 30 second frames, and felt pretty good about it. Got home and stacked everything in Sequator and there's this huge orange glow creeping in from the left side of every single frame. Turns out it was a neighbor's motion light the whole time, and I never saw it because it only kicked on when their dog went out around 1am. I wasted most of a clear night and now I gotta go back out and reshoot the whole thing. Lesson for me is to do a test shot and just watch the sky for 15 minutes before I commit to a long run. Anyone got a good way to check for stray light sources nearby before you start a stack, or do you just pick a spot and hope for the best?
