Hot take: most guys sand filler way too fine before primer and it bites them later
I picked up a respray job on a 2011 Civic last month and the owner had done his own bodywork first. He was real proud of it too, told me he blocked the filler down to 600 grit before he brought it in. I ran my hand over it and could already see the scratches telegraphing through where he had feathered it out. Primer needs something to bite into, and 600 grit is just too slick for most build primers to grab hold of. I ended up going back over his filler areas with 180 on a DA, then 320 by hand around the edges, and the primer laid down flat with no shrink back. The car sat in my booth for two days after blocking and there was not one sand scratch showing. He came back a week later asking why I reworked his prep, and when I showed him the difference under a light he got quiet. What grit is everyone else stopping at before their first primer coat on filler?
