After 8 years, I stopped trusting torque specs on old rigs
I used to follow the manual on every single fastener, like it was religion. Then last month I had this old fleet truck come in with a stripped oil pan bolt, and the owner said his guy always just snugged it by feel. I fought the urge to correct him, but after I rethreaded it and ran it hand tight plus a quarter turn, it's been dry for 3 weeks. That got me thinking about all the times I've seen factory specs fail on weathered threads, especially with aluminum pans. Am I the only one who thinks torque numbers are more of a suggestion once rust and heat cycles get involved?
