Took me ten years to figure out I had been torquing lug nuts way too tight on Chevy trucks.
Had a wheel stud snap clean off on a 2500HD last Tuesday and an old timer walked over and told me I was cranking them like a gorilla instead of using a torque stick, which made me realize I never actually read the spec chart in my toolbox.

The real hidden cost nobody talks about is how overtightening warps the brake rotors over time. I chased a pulsating pedal on my Silverado for three years, replaced pads and rotors twice before I figured out the wheel torque was pulling the rotor out of flat just enough to wobble on the hub. Once I started using a beam-style torque wrench set to spec the brake shudder vanished completely. That old timer saved you a lot more than just a snapped stud, you probably avoided replacing a hub assembly down the road too.
