A thru-hiker in Glacier told me my route was dumb, he was right
Last July on the Highline Trail I kept stopping to take photos and this guy with a beat up ULA pack walks past and says 'you know that detour to the overlook adds 4 miles for a view you can see from camp.' He was a section hiker doing 80 miles in 5 days and I was on a 3 day trip with 2 nights of luxury camping gear. Since when did route planning become a contest of who suffers more, or is there actual value in skipping the extra viewpoints to save energy for the climb out?
