That one guy who told me to just make it work with a dull endmill

Had a customer come into the shop last Tuesday, needed a bunch of aluminum parts done overnight. I told him flat out my endmill was getting dull and I'd need to order a new one, which would push it to Thursday. This guy just looked at me and said 'just run it, it's only 10 parts.' Like dude, do you know what happens when you push a dull tool through 6061? I ran the first part and the finish looked like garbage, plus I could hear the machine struggling. Spent an extra hour sanding down burrs just to make it look half decent. Next time I'm charging him double for rush jobs with crappy tooling.

Rider in building 7 taught me something about leveling

I was fixing a door sensor in a midtown office tower last Tuesday when this older guy in a suit came up and asked if I knew why the car always stopped a half inch low on floor 12. He had been riding that elevator for 10 years and kept a little notebook of every time it did it. Turns out he was an electrical engineer and his notes helped me find a worn controller relay I would have missed. Has anyone else had a regular tenant give you useful data like that?

I finally saw what a fresh plane blade does to figured maple after fighting tearout for months on a curly maple table top I was building for a client in Denver. Turns out my sharpening angle was off by about 5 degrees, which I only discovered after my buddy brought his Tormek over and showed me the difference in 20 minutes. Anyone else had that moment where a simple setup change blew their mind?

Found out my local coffee shop charges $0.50 less if you bring your own cup

I was going through my budget last month and noticed I spent $18 on coffee cups alone. I read on the shop's website that they actually discount drinks for reusable cups, so now I save $2.50 each week just by bringing a thermos. Has anyone else found hidden discounts like this in their area?

Hit 50 coffee shops in 3 months and still can't decide if loud or quiet is better

I've been tracking every cafe I work from since April. 32 of them were packed with people and noise, 18 were almost empty and dead quiet. The weird thing is I got more code done in the loud ones. But my focus felt better in the quiet ones. So which actually wins for productivity? Has anyone else noticed a pattern with background noise and how much you actually get done?

I just found out the official Pacific Crest Trail is 2,650 miles long, not 2,650.1

I was reading the PCTA's website last night, planning a section hike for next year. They have this whole page about trail length, and it says the exact number is 2,650 miles from border to border. For some reason I always thought it was that extra tenth of a mile, like it was a more precise number. It's a tiny detail, but it made me double-check all my other planned distances. Has anyone else had a simple trail fact turn out to be wrong in their notes?

Trying to piece together a broken pot from a dig site took me three whole days

I was working on a dig in New Mexico last month, and we found what looked like a plain storage pot in pieces. My job was to put it back together, and I figured it would be a quick afternoon thing. Wrong. The pieces were all the same color and none of the breaks were clean, so nothing fit right at first. I had to sort them by thickness and curve, which took forever. After about 16 hours spread over three days, I finally got the main shape. It turned out to have a cool zigzag pattern near the base we couldn't see before. Has anyone else had a simple find turn into a huge puzzle like that? What's your method for tricky pottery?

My old boss told me to never ask for a raise in the first year, but I got a 15% bump after 8 months by showing my project numbers.

He said 'wait your turn' but I tracked every client I brought in, showed the exact revenue from my big Denver project, and my new manager said the data made it an easy yes.
