PSA: That famous Half Dome permit stat is real and it caught me off guard
I pulled up the NPS page for Yosemite and the cables section says only 300 people a day get to go up, with something like 50,000 people trying. If you're planning a Sierra route this summer, you need to enter that lottery way earlier than you think. How far ahead are you all locking in permits?
The "50,000 people trying" number is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. That's the total lottery pool for the whole season, not 50,000 folks all gunning for the same weekend you want, and the odds shift a bunch depending on whether you're flexible on dates. I've seen people win on their first try in September while everyone else was fighting over July 4th. Real talk, the permit thing matters way less than people make it out to be, since you can also day hike the cables with a wilderness permit from a different trailhead and skip the whole mess.
