Stop using those phone GPS apps for canyon routes, they'll get you stuck
Last summer I watched a group of three try to follow Google Maps down a wash in Death Valley that dead-ended at a 40 foot dryfall. They had to backtrack 2 miles in 104 degree heat. The app shows dirt roads that haven't existed since the 90s, and it doesn't tell you when a route is actually a climber's path. I've been guiding out there for 4 years and I always print paper topo maps now. Has anyone else nearly gotten pinned by following a phone overlay instead of a proper route description?
