Swapped my double-wall shelter for a tarp and bivy on the Eagle Rock Loop, woke up drier
Last October I hiked the 26 mile Eagle Rock Loop in Arkansas with a 3 pound tent. Halfway through, a guy camped next to me had a $70 silnylon tarp and a bug net, total weight under a pound. I figured he'd get soaked if it rained. It rained both nights after that and he stayed dry while my tent collected condensation like a swimming pool. I ordered the same setup when I got home and used it on three trips since, including a wet weekend near Hot Springs. Now I'm wondering if I even need a tent for three season stuff anymore. Anyone here run a tarp and bivy in real storm conditions, and did you ever miss having walls?
