Talking to a guy in Moab made me rethink my whole pack weight setup
Met this older hiker at a trailhead near Moab last month while I was swapping shoes. He noticed my pack was sagging and asked what I was carrying. I listed off all my emergency gear, extra layers, backup stove, the whole deal. He just laughed and said, 'You're carrying your fear, not your route.' Then he showed me his 30 liter bag with a tarp, a water filter, and a single change of socks. It hit me because I've been lugging 45 pounds for 5 years and complaining about my knees every trip. Anyone else had a weird run-in that made them strip down their kit?
Man that hits hard because I see the same thing everywhere, people carrying way more baggage than they need just cause theyre scared of what might happen. I swear half the stuff we haul around in life is just insurance for problems that never show up.
