The ranger who said to skip the switchbacks was absolutely right

At Glacier Point last June, a ranger told me the old climbers route shaved 4 miles off the Panorama Trail if I didn't mind a loose scree section, and it was sketchy but totally doable, have any of you taken that cutoff during wet weather?
