Wasted $60 on a so-called 'ultralight' sleeping bag that weighed as much as my regular one

Bought it from some online deal after a late night search and it showed up at 4.2 pounds instead of the 1.5 they claimed. Anyone else get burned by sketchy gear specs on Amazon?

Yeah I got burned bad last year with a "down sleeping bag" that was clearly just polyester fill. Weighed 3 pounds more than advertised. What finally worked for me was hitting up the outdoor gear forums and asking people who actually owned the bag to weigh it. Found a few dudes with kitchen scales who posted real numbers. Then I only bought from brands that listed the exact fill weight and had a return policy that didn't suck. REI's return policy saved me twice. Also started buying from cottage companies like Hammock Gear or Enlightened Equipment. They're small but they actually tell you what you're getting.

One of my buddies fell for the exact same thing, bought a bag that claimed 800 fill down and it was basically a blanket wrapped in nylon (weighed a ton). He was so mad he actually cut it open to check and yep, totally synthetic fill inside. @the_robin your forum method is smart, I should tell him about that because he gave up on online shopping entirely after that. He ended up driving two hours to a store just to manhandle bags in person before buying anything. That whole experience made him paranoid about every brand now, even the legit ones, which is a shame because there are good companies out there.
