The $140 heat lamp disaster that nearly cooked my flock
Last winter I bought a fancy thermostat-controlled heat lamp for the coop, the kind with the digital probe and all that. Set it up in 20 minutes, felt so smart about it. Three nights later the probe slipped off the perch and the thing ran at full blast all night, melted the bulb socket and scorched half the bedding. No birds got hurt but I smelled it before I saw it, and the whole lamp was toast. I replaced it with a simple $25 brooder plate from Tractor Supply and never looked back. Anyone else had a smart gadget fail harder than a basic one?

Exactly, the more tech you stack on a simple setup, the more single points of failure you create. That digital probe was the weak link, and a dumb plate with no moving parts just cant have that same catastrophic day. Down the road, the cheap and boring option usually wins because it does one job without trying to think for itself.
