I keep seeing new folks in my neighborhood point their scopes straight at the moon on night one and then wonder why they can't see anything else, when really you should start with something dim but steady like Albireo or the Pleiades and save the moon for when you know your focus is dialed in, so what's the first target you tell a total beginner to try instead?
What kind of scope are they working with? When my brother got his first small refractor, the moon was actually a good way to learn how the focuser felt without hunting for something faint in the dark. Once he had that down, the Pleiades were the perfect next step since they're easy to find and look great even in a cheap eyepiece.
