My buddy's offhand comment about cheap binoculars got me thinking

I was out in Sacramento last weekend with my friend Mike, just looking at the moon with my old 10x50s, and he goes 'man, you ever think about how much light you're missing with those $30 lenses?' He's not even a big stargazer, just a curious dude, but it hit different because I've been using the same pair for 5 years and never questioned if better glass would actually show more. Anyone else upgrade their binoculars and notice a big difference, or is it mostly hype?

I switched to mid-range Celestrons and the difference in nebula detail was CRAZY honestly.

Jaw dropped reading that. I've been messing around with a cheap scope I got off FB marketplace and the nebulae just look like faint grey smudges no matter how much I tweak the knobs. Heard people say mid range gear unlocks whole new layers of detail, wasn't sure if they were just hyping themselves up but your post is making me seriously reconsider saving up for a real upgrade.
