Sharknado marathon almost ruined movie night for good

Watched all six Sharknado movies in one weekend last month. By the third one I couldn't tell if the bad CGI was making me laugh or slowly killing my soul. Has anyone else binged a franchise so bad it looped back around to painful instead of fun?

PSA: Hit 10,000 hours of spindle runtime on my Haas VF-2 today and the backlash was way worse than I thought

I finally rolled over to 10,000 hours on my machine last shift and decided to check the backlash as a routine thing (figured it would be a couple thou, you know). Turns out I was running with 0.008 inches of backlash on the X axis and had no idea. My parts were wandering around by like 0.005 over the last couple weeks and I just blamed it on tool wear or temperature swings. The ballscrew nut is shot, gonna cost me around $1,200 for a new one plus a day of downtime to swap it. Has anyone else had a machine sneak up on them like this with a big tolerance issue? How often do you guys actually check your backlash?

Went with a $40 used dobsonian over a brand new $200 refractor for my first scope

Picked up that beat up Orion on craigslist from a guy in Bakersfield and honestly the light gathering on Jupiter's moons blew away anything that little glass tube was gonna show me, who else has gone vintage over new gear and regretted or loved it?

Swapped my gas lawn mower for an electric one 3 months ago...

I always thought electric mowers were weak and expensive. Then my neighbor in Phoenix let me try his EGO mower last April. Cut through my bermuda grass no problem and I didnt have to smell gas or hear that loud noise. My electric bill only went up like $2 a month. Has anyone else made the switch and noticed a big difference?

Drove 3 hours to a competition and watched a guy ruin his brisket by mopping it too early

I was at a BBQ competition in Kansas City last Saturday and this one team kept opening their smoker every 20 minutes to mop their brisket. Every time they opened the door, all that heat just whooshed out. By the time they pulled it, the bark was all mushy and the meat was dry as dirt. I tried to mention it to them but they said they were following a recipe from some YouTube guy. It's like people forget that heat management is way more important than mopping every hour. Has anyone else seen someone sabotage their own cook like that?

Found out the hard way that poly B plumbing isn't the same as PEX

Was helping a buddy reno his basement in Airdrie last month when I noticed the old grey pipes and figured I'd just swap in new PEX like I always do. Cut into it and realized it was polybutylene, which is a whole different beast with those brittle fittings that can burst without warning. Now I'm debating whether to replace the whole house system piece by piece or just bite the bullet and repipe everything at once. Has anyone else dealt with poly B in their Alberta home and what did you end up doing?

Hot take: I think I ruined my cast iron pan after one bad cook session

Last Tuesday I was at my aunt's place in Austin and tried to sear a steak on her old Lodge pan. She told me to get it screaming hot but I let it go too long and the seasoning completely flaked off. Now every time I cook eggs they stick like glue. I stripped it down and tried re-seasoning with flaxseed oil three times but it still looks patchy. Should I just start over or can this pan still be saved?

Debate: skimming audiobooks vs. reading the actual pages

I used to speed up audiobooks to 2x and skip chapters to finish faster, but last month I hit play on a slow burner novel and caught details I'd normally miss. Now I'm wondering if skimming is really saving time or just ruining the story. Which side do you fall on for dense literary fiction?

@grace419 oh man the calculator thing is too real. I once spent a solid ten minutes trying to tap a "stuck" YouTube video only to realize I had zoomed in on a screenshot of the video instead of actually playing it. Your coworker Jen's story is honestly pretty relatable, those brain check out moments happen to ALL of us. It helps to know I'm not the only one who does this stuff.

Had a neighbor yell at me for hanging laundry on a line instead of using a dryer

Yeah, but honestly I can kind of see where the neighbor is coming from. If somebody hung up laundry that dripped water all over my walkway or shared fence line, I'd probably say something too. You never really know what's going on in someone else's head, maybe she's got sensory issues or just really particular about the appearance of the street. I've had neighbors who hung up some really ratty looking stuff that made the whole block look worse, not that I ever said anything myself. Your mileage may vary on this one, but sometimes people making a complaint have a point even if they come off rude.
