My neighbor Dale says a $40 pair of binoculars beats a starter telescope, and I'm honestly not sure who's right

Talked with Dale over the fence in Ames, Iowa last night while we were both out watching Jupiter, and he swore his old 10x50 Bushnells show him more than the $150 scope he gave away. My take is a tripod mounted scope pulls in way more detail on the moon and Saturn's rings, but he says most people quit because shaking hands and cheap mounts ruin it. I see both sides and I keep flip flopping on what to tell beginners. What did you actually start with, and did it stick?
