My uncle swore I'd see more stars if I let my eyes adjust for 20 minutes, and I owe him an apology
Back in March I set up my little 4 inch scope in the driveway in Fort Wayne and my uncle kept saying to sit in the dark for 20 whole minutes before looking up. I thought it was nonsense and peeked right away, saw about 6 faint dots, and almost packed it in. Then I actually waited, fiddled with nothing, just sat there, and by minute 20 Orion's nebula went from a smudge to an actual fuzzy patch. Same sky, same cheap scope, only my eyes changed. Now I'm curious if 20 minutes is the real number or if you all push it longer on clear nights.
