Old me used both eyes and a flashlight, new me learned to keep one eye shut for 20 minutes
For two years I would run outside, flip on the porch light to check my star chart, then wonder why I could barely make out the Orion Nebula in my 6 inch dob. A guy at the Ponce City Market meetup last month told me to cover one eye with my palm and leave the light off for a full 20 minutes before looking up. I tried it on my back patio in Decatur and the difference was nuts, the Trapezium stars popped out where before I got a gray smudge. Now I keep a red headlamp clipped to my belt and never turn on the white porch light once it gets dark. Does anyone else have a weird trick like that for getting your night vision going faster?
Keeping one eye shut for 20 minutes sounded like overkill to me until I tried it camping last fall, now I do it every single time. That gray smudge turning into actual stars is the whole reason I stopped rushing my setup.
