My buddy Darryl said to watch "The Room" with subtitles on, and he was dead right
We do bad movie night every other Friday at my place in Akron, and I kept putting off The Room because I figured once was enough. Darryl kept bugging me to rewatch it with the subtitles turned on, saying the random conversations and Tommy's lines read even funnier on screen. Fired it up last week with two buddies and a $12 Little Caesars pizza, and I lost it when the subtitle just read "You are tearing me apart, Lisa!" while Chris-R stands there with a gun. Should we make subtitles the default rule for bad movie night, or does it ruin some of the chaos?
Did you catch the part where the subtitles show stuff the actors are clearly not saying out loud? I used to be against it, I figured half the fun of bad movie night was us yelling over each other and making up our own riffs, so turning on subtitles felt like it would kill the chaos. Then we tried it on a lark and I was wrong. The words on screen are so deadpan and weird that it gives everyone the same joke at the same time, and we end up laughing harder together instead of stepping on each other. Chris-R with the gun and that line on screen is a perfect example, you can't make that up yourself. I would say make it the default rule but keep one movie a month without them so you still get the old messy vibe.
